NEWBURY PARK : Transient Pleads Not Guilty to Break-Ins
- Share via
A 31-year-old transient pleaded not guilty Thursday to breaking into two Newbury Park residences and claiming to be the Pied Piper as he threatened residents with a four-foot bamboo pole.
Brett Doherty is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism and being under the influence of drugs. He is accused of walking into the home of Ron Oatman on Monday.
Oatman shot Doherty in the leg before Steven Schmidt chased the transient into the street, where the two engaged in a swashbuckling stick fight.
Doherty gave up the battle, darted across the street and dived through the bay window of Oliver and Frances Kimball’s home, police said.
Doherty’s preliminary hearing was set for Aug. 15. He remained jailed in lieu of $10,000 bond.
