LONDON — A British Broadcasting Corp. journalist covering the Balkan conflict was shot to death Wednesday, the BBC said.
John Schofield, 29, a reporter for BBC Radio’s “The World Tonight” program, died immediately from a single bullet to the neck when Croatian forces opened fire, a BBC spokesman said.
Two people traveling with Schofield were wounded in the attack. They are Adam Kelleher, a cameraman with World Service TV, and Omar Osawi of the World Service Arabic. A fourth journalist, Jonathan Birchall of World Service TV, was uninjured.
The journalists were on their way from Karlovac, Croatia, to Bihac, Bosnia-Herzegovina, when they got out of their vehicle to start filming.
It was not clear why the Croats fired.
Croatian troops took the men to a Karlovac hospital. The United Nations in Zagreb will conduct an informal inquiry into the incident, the BBC added.
