Hershey Introduces Reduced-Fat Chips: Hershey Foods Corp. has started U.S. sales of reduced-fat chocolate flavor chips, the company’s first reduced-fat product. The new chips contain half the fat of its semisweet chocolate chips, said Hershey spokeswoman Bonnie Hinkson. The chips replace the cocoa butter typically used in chocolate with salatrin, a naturally occurring fat made by Pfizer Inc. Salatrin has almost the same fat content as cocoa butter, or 3 1/2 grams per tablespoon to cocoa butter’s 4. However, salatrin is not metabolized by the body in the same way, and that has the effect of only containing half the fat, the company said.
