William M. McPhillips, 76, former news reporter in Los Angeles and San Francisco. A reporter on The Times’ Metro staff from 1965 to 1977, McPhillips had also worked for Newsweek magazine, KSFO Radio in San Francisco, the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner, the Los Angeles Daily News and the Beverly Hills Bulletin. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a native of Mobile, Ala. On Sept. 9 in South Pasadena.
