Prop. 187 Targets Group--Lawbreakers
How Helena Maria Viamontes “thrashes Proposition 187 for being discriminatory” is just another version of the old hat trick (“Writing Wrongs,” Sept. 17).
Maybe we shouldn’t punish shoplifters, robbers or drug dealers because that would be discriminatory. Proposition 187 is discriminatory only in that it requires that the individual not be a lawbreaker as a qualification for assistance. Being in a country illegally hardly qualifies.
It is interesting to note that one of the failures of the ancient Roman Empire was its inability to protect its borders from a group of people with a far lower educational level and a far higher birthrate. In other words, Rome was compromised.
