Unless Students Learn, Education Fails

I have read the Los Angeles Times cover to cover the 10 years I have been in California. Prior to that, I was a university professor for 13 years. I have eagerly read all your articles on education.

Always, there is news of the latest methodology, the need for more money and the need for smaller classes.

Frequently, as in the above article, there is one approach pitted against another.

But the one factor I’ve always noticed missing is the fact that no one talks about the need for disciplined study on the part of the students.

It’s as if the administrations, the faculties and the parents are afraid they will put upon the children if they demand consistent study at home. It seems so terribly obvious to me that excellent teaching includes the demand of acquiring what the teacher proffers.
