LA HABRA — Buena Park quarterback Brian McDonald stood at midfield and slammed his helmet into the ground twice, showing the depth of his frustration after the Coyotes lost to La Habra, 18-8, in aFreeway League game Friday night at La Habra High.
“Too many damn turnovers,” said Buena Park Coach Bob Rau.
The Coyotes (0-6, 0-1) lost four fumbles, but the biggest error of the night came when McDonald fielded a punt at his own two-yard line, stepped back into the end zone and knelt down for a safety.
“He got confused,” said Rau. “Brian’s young, he’s only a sophomore. It’s a credit to him that he held his poise and ran the team real well.”
After the safety, La Habra (3-3, 1-0) drove 51 yards on 10 plays with Tom White scoring from five yards out to give the Highlanders an 8-0 lead. White pounded the Buena Park defense by rushing for 106 yards in 24 carries.
McDonald broke loose on a 78-yard touchdown run with 1 minute 14 seconds left in the first quarter and then passed to Osvaldo Olmos for the two-point conversion to tie the score, 8-8.
