Boston U. Hockey Player, 20, Paralyzed During First Game

BOSTON — Boston University freshman left wing Travis Roy, playing in his first college game, was paralyzed Friday after he checked an opponent, then crashed headfirst into the boards.
Roy, 20, of Yarmouth, Me., sustained a fracture of the cervical spine and a cracked fourth vertebrae. He was paralyzed from the neck down, according to Tony Schepsis, the team doctor.
His family watched from the stands as doctors treated Roy.
Roy was transported to Boston City Hospital where he was listed in serious but stable condition late Friday. Surgery was scheduled for Saturday or Sunday.
Schepsis said a full recovery was unlikely.
“Anything can happen. It’s too early to tell for sure, but the statistics on this type of injury are not good,” he said.
