Fiery Israeli Crash Kills at Least 9

JERUSALEM — A truck veered into oncoming traffic Tuesday on a main road to Jerusalem, dragging a van several yards and hitting four other cars in an accident that killed at least nine people.
Traffic police commander Yisrael Shalom said police were investigating whether the truck driver fell asleep or accelerated before the accident about nine miles northwest of the city.
Three of the vehicles went up in flames, and police said the crash was one of the worst in Israel’s history.
Israel Radio said 11 people died in the accident and that eight of them were Israeli Arabs from the northern town of Nazareth.
Authorities could not identify the victims--or even their cars.
“The sight is horrifying,” Shalom told Army Radio. He put the death toll at nine but said it could rise.
