WORLD PRESS PHOTO 1995 no author credited (Thames & Hudson: $19.95; 132 pp., paperback original). Now in its 38th year, the annual competition held by the World Press Photo Foundation received entries from nearly 3,000 photographers in 97 countries. The winners offer a powerful, depressing documentation of the brutal events in Rwanda, Chechnya, the former Yugoslavia and Haiti. The Photograph of the Year shows a Hutu man who was mutilated by guerrillas who suspected him of Tutsi sympathies.
