Mater Dei Hits School-Record Eight Home Runs in 14-3 Victory

Mater Dei hit a school-record eight home runs, including four in the sixth inning, in a 14-3 victory over Dana Hills in a South Coast League baseball game Tuesday at Dana Hills.

Mike Kolbach hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Mike Hessman followed with his second of the game. He has five homers this season.

Brett Kay and Ryan Leinart added two-run homers in the sixth. All four home runs came with no outs.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Blackmun and Pat Manning also had homers for Mater Dei (10-1, 6-0 in league).

In other South Coast League games:

Capistrano Valley 15, Trabuco Hills 1--Dan Davis was four for four with a double, home run and two RBIs for Capistrano Valley (8-2, 4-2).

San Clemente 8, Mission Viejo 2--Corey Tolmasoff had two hits and two runs scored for visiting San Clemente (4-6-2, 2-3-1).

In the Golden West League:

Servite 10, Tustin 1--Ryan Garko was four for four with three RBIs for Servite (9-4, 4-2) and teammate Greg Cicero had three hits and four RBIs.

Ocean View 6, Westminster 2--Jason Martini had three hits and two RBIs for Ocean View (6-7, 4-2).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 7, Brethren Christian 5--Dan Young hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to win it for Orange Lutheran (5-5, 3-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 4, Laguna Beach 3 (8)--Tom Banning hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Jose Cardozo for visiting Laguna Hills (10-3, 6-0). Cardozo ran for Ryan O’Donnell, who doubled to lead off the inning.

University 4, Aliso Niguel 2--Rory Osbrink (3-1) pitched a two-hitter for University (7-6, 4-2).

Costa Mesa 11, Estancia 9--Mike Adelmund had double and a home run and drove in three runs and Seth Halverson had a double and a triple and drove in two for host Estancia (7-4, 4-2).

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 9, Newport Harbor 4--Travis Vessells had three hits and four RBIs and Joe Smith had two hits and two RBIs and pitched a complete game for visiting El Toro (8-4-1, 4-1-1).

Irvine 2, Santa Margarita 0--Brian Krill pitched a two-hit shutout for Irvine (6-5-1, 4-1-1).

Corona del Mar 16, Woodbridge 8--Kevin Stuart, Royal McMackim and Ryan Achterberg each had three hits for Corona del Mar (7-4, 4-2).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 7, Huntington Beach 6--Brian Snapp hit a bases-loaded single with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run to give Esperanza the victory over eighth-ranked Huntington Beach.

The Aztecs (6-6, 4-2) trailed, 6-0, after 5 1/2 innings, then Omar Oragel hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to highlight a six-run inning.

Edison 6, Los Alamitos 2--Christian Popoff hit two home runs and had four RBIs and Ron Aparicio pitched a complete game, striking out seven, for host Edison (5-7, 3-3).

In the Las Vegas Durango tournament:

Canyon 15, Tucson (Ariz.) Flowing Wells 4--Mike Tomarelli had three hits, two doubles and four runs scored and Todd Kellogg had three hits and five RBIs for Canyon (13-1).

In the Santa Ana Elks tournament:

Katella 6, Baldwin Park 3--Hector Vazquez was four for four with three runs scored for Katella (11-4) in the championship semifinals.

In consolation games:

Santiago 4, George Marshall (Va.) 1--Bobby Castelleon had an RBI single and pitched the final three innings to earn the save for Santiago, which notched its first victory this season.

Santa Ana Valley 6, Los Amigos 4--Gerry Maldonado gave up no hits and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings of relief for the victory. Manuel Lucio had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. The Falcons take on Saddleback at 1:30 p.m. today at Villa Park High for the consolation championship.

Saddleback 8, Century 2--Frankie Gonzalez had two hits and two RBIs for host Saddleback (4-8), which scored six runs in the first of a consolation game. Hector Espino allowed no earned runs and struck out nine in six innings to earn the victory.

In the Anaheim Lions tournament:

Cypress 9, Western 5--Bobby Brito hit a grand slam in the sixth to break a 5-5 tie for visiting Cypress (8-6) in a pool-play game. Brito, who has seven home runs, also had a double and five RBIs.

Nick Swanson had three hits for Western (8-6).
