RUSSIA : 120 Chechen Rebels, 40 Soldiers Killed

Russian troops killed about 120 rebel fighters in a fierce battle in a separatist stronghold in western Chechnya, Defense Ministry officials said. As many as 40 Russian soldiers were killed in the fighting near the village of Bamut, according to the Itar-Tass news agency. A high-ranking Defense Ministry official said up to 1,000 rebel fighters are defending the hills around the village, which lies in ruin.
