NASA to Help Fund Project to Study Fish

Fishermen and scientists will join nets and satellites for a NASA-backed project. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said it will pay half the $2.4-million tab for a three-year pilot study to build a database to predict water temperature, current patterns, fish location and plankton levels in the ocean off the northeastern United States. Satellite images will allow scientists to monitor surface temperature and ocean height, track currents and map the ocean floor. During the project’s first year, dozens of fishermen will attach special sensors to their dragnets to measure temperatures for the entire depth of the ocean.
