Watts Festival Honors Community Leaders

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the upcoming Watts Summer Festival, the event’s board of directors initiated the first “Founders Awards.”

Seven community leaders were honored Friday at a pre-festival luncheon at Phoenix Hall, a community center, for their contributions to the enrichment of education, art and history in Watts.

The honorees included: Elizabeth Eastman, representative of the Watts-Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club; Alma Reeves Woods, librarian at the library named after her; Dr. Maulana Karenga, African American studies professor at California State University, Long Beach; Roger Mosley, actor, director and spokesperson for nationwide at-risk youth groups, and the Watts Prophets, a trio of spoken-word artists.

“It’s important that today’s youth get as much education as they can,” Mosley said. “That comes in the different forms recognized today.”

The festival, which includes a parade, cultural exhibits, food and games, will take place Aug. 7 to 11 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Edwin Markham Middle School.
