Brett Favre, in his first game since completing a stay at a rehabilitation center for his addiction to painkillers, completed five of 10 passes for 54 yards as the Green Bay Packers defeated the New England Patriots, 24-7, Friday night at Green Bay, Wis.

Favre looked trim after losing 14 pounds during the 46-day rehabilitation that ended June 28. He played all but the final two series of the first half before giving way to Doug Pederson, who completed 13 of 19 passes for 125 yards.

Joe Aska scored on a one-yard scoring run late in the third quarter and the Oakland Raiders earned a 26-3 victory over the Arizona Cardinals at Tempe, Ariz.

Wes Bender added another touchdown on a four-yard run with 34 seconds left. Cole Ford kicked field goals of 32 and 25 yards, and Jeff Jaeger converted from 44 and 22 yards.

Keith Elias scored on a three-yard run with 27 seconds left, leading the New York Giants to a 24-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Jacksonville, Fla.

The Giants’ Tommy Maddux completed nine of 13 passes for 118 yards in the second half.

The Jaguars’ Andre Rison, who signed the day before training camp began, caught a 24-yard touchdown pass.

Heath Shuler completed 12 of 15 passes for 127 yards and directed two first-half scoring drives as the Washington Redskins beat the Buffalo Bills, 17-7, at Orchard Park, N.Y.

Gus Frerotte completed nine of 12 passes for 87 yards for the Redskins in the second half.

Jim Kelly of the Bills, who had planned to sit out the game in protest over stalled contract negotiations, completed six of nine passes for 67 yards in two series, including a six-yard touchdown.

The New Orleans Saints scored two touchdowns in the final 1:54 to defeat the Detroit Lions, 23-22, in an exhibition at Pontiac, Mich.
