Early Morning Fire Destroys House

An early morning fire gutted the home of a Simi Valley family on Tuesday, forcing them into a local motel.
The fire, which started about 1:20 a.m., burned much of the Stow Street home occupied by Paul and Miriam Smith and their 8-year-old daughter.
It took firefighters about half an hour to fight the blaze that started in the Smith family’s computer room, a fire spokeswoman said.
The fire destroyed much of the home causing an estimated $95,000 in damage, the spokeswoman said.
A team of Red Cross volunteers were called to the scene and took the displaced family to a local motel, said Richard Rink, a spokesman for the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
“We’ll be working with them until their insurance kicks in,” Rink said.
