Turner Broadcasting System will apply for an NHL expansion franchise--a bid that, if successful, would give the company its third professional sports team in Atlanta to go along with the Braves and Hawks. . . . The New York Islanders finally completed contract negotiations with free agent right wing Zigmund Palffy, who agreed to a two-year deal believed to pay $1.5 million this season and $1.6 million in 1997-98. . . . Bob Davidson, captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs when they won the Stanley Cup in 1945, died Thursday at 84.
