** Frosted, “Cold,” Geffen. Based on a heftier musical premise than some of her post-Go-Go’s solo work, Jane Wiedlin’s new outfit balances frothier melodic tendencies with raw-edged rock elements to arrive at something suggesting Elastica’s scrappy American cousin. “Empty & Meaningless” is a biting gibe at Gen-X ennui; “Hope” has a pop-infatuated punk grit that’s reminiscent of the Ramones; and “Never” packs a scruffy, tuneful punch that recalls the Replacements.
Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
