*** ZZ Top, “Rhythmeen,” RCA. Back home on La Grange. The Texas trio has scuttled the synthesizers and processors that made it a somewhat cartoonish mainstay of the ‘80s pop charts and returned to the lean, gritty, guitar-driven sound it began with. The results are a nasty blast. There’s nothing deep here--most songs are aimed below the belt line--but the players reclaim their standing as masters of the dirty boogie.
Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
