More than three dozen new call boxes will be installed along Ventura County highways in the next few months, after transportation officials on Friday approved an $80,000 emergency road service program.
The Ventura County Transportation Commission agreed to install 37 new call boxes along sections of California 23 between Moorpark and Fillmore, California 150 between Santa Paula and the Ventura-Santa Barbara county line and state Route 34, also known as Lewis Road, between Oxnard and Camarillo.
The new roadside telephones, which will bring the number of boxes in the Ventura County system to nearly 400, will be installed and working before the end of the year.
Transit planners typically install new call boxes along stretches of highway that attract more and more cars every year.
