Five Orange County high school seniors have been named semifinalists in the 1997 achievement scholarship program and will compete for 750 scholarship awards totaling nearly $3 million, the National Merit Organization announced.
The semifinalists, 1,500 nationwide, were chosen from a pool of more than 10,000 students.
The annual scholarship program is a privately financed academic competition that honors outstanding African American students. It is supported by more than 140 corporate organizations, foundations and academic institutions.
The students will be judged in the final round of competition in several areas, including academic performance, community and school activities, Scholastic Aptitude Test scores and the recommendations of their high school principals.
The five Orange County semifinalists are Anastacia V. Flippin of Dana Hills High School, Dana Point; Leonard W. Johnson, Sunny Hills High School, Fullerton; Eugene L. Mahmoud, University High School, Irvine; Sidney K. Wilberforce, Laguna Hills High School; and Nii Mantse Addy, Mission Viejo High School.
The finalists will be announced in the spring.
