Newport Beach Player Wins in Senior Tennis

NEWPORT BEACH — Bev Winnans of Newport Beach and Liz Harper of La Jolla teamed to defeat Fresno’s Elaine Mason and Peggy Landtroop of Dallas, 6-3, 6-1, to win the 65 doubles division of U.S. Tennis Assn. Senior Women’s Hardcourt Championship on Friday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Top-seeded Dodo Cheney of La Jolla and Corky Murdock of Los Angeles won the 75 doubles division by defeating Jean Harris of Carmel and Lucy Dettmer of Cathedral City, 6-4, 6-1.
Laguna Beach’s Doris Clark advanced to the finals of the 65 singles by defeating Harper, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Clark faces Louise Russ of Deerfield Beach, Fla., at 9:30 today.
Sylmar’s Eleanor Harbula faces Cheney in the finals of the 75 singles after the 65 singles match.
