Royal Defeats Buena in Water Polo

The Royal High water polo team passed its first major test toward a second consecutive Southern Section Division IV championship with a 13-4 victory over Buena in the San Luis Obispo tournament on Friday.
The Highlanders (9-4) took a 10-1 halftime lead, then cruised in the second half. Chris Richeson scored four goals for Royal and Jason Perry added three.
Royal, the top-ranked Division IV team, advances to today’s semifinals in a tournament that features the top five Division IV teams.
Crespi 19, Burroughs 11--Rick Bejune had six goals and Chris Helin and Kevin Fitzpatrick each had five for the Celts (9-10) at Crespi.
Crespi, led by goalie Peter Driscoll’s 15 saves, held Burroughs’ leading scorer Alfonso Tucay to six goals. Driscoll stopped a Tucay penalty shot in the first quarter.
Nordhoff 9, Milken 8--Ranger goalkeeper Andy Ferdell saved the potential game-tying goal with time running out to preserve a victory for Nordhoff in its Frontier League opener at Milken.
Goals by Torey Rubrecht and Justin Jewell gave the Rangers (6-4, 1-0) a 9-7 lead late in the fourth quarter, but Milken scored with one minute remaining to come within 9-8.
Jewell scored six goals and Rubrecht had two.
Harvard-Westlake 8, Davis 7--The Wolverines advanced to the semifinal of the prestigious Southern California Invitational at Heritage Park Aquatic Complex in Irvine.
Earlier in the day Harvard-Westlake defeated Lodi Tokay , 10-7. The Wolverines face Santa Ana Foothill, the top-ranked team in Southern Section Division I, at 12:30 p.m. today.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Cuesta 3, Ventura 1--Allyson Munday scored on a penalty shot and goalie Lori Bailey had 12 saves for the Pirates (7-2, 3-1) in a Western State Conference match at Cuesta.
MEN’S SOCCER
Cal Poly SLO 2, Cal State Northridge 1--Tony Chowana-Bandhu scored in the 45th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Mustangs at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Gavin Hewitt came off the bench to score the lone Matador goal off of a Luis Cruz corner kick.
Northridge goalkeeper Daryl Munday had five saves.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Providence d. Holy Martyrs, 11-15, 15-6, 7-15, 15-4, 15-6--Cathleen Reuter had nine kills in a Liberty League match at Providence.
Angie Diaz had eight aces for the Pioneers (5-2, 1-1).
Oak Park d. Cate, 15-9, 15-13, 15-13--Tanya Klaidjian had nine kills for the Eagles at Oak Park.
Joanna Kennedy added five blocks for the Eagles (2-4).
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cal Lutheran d. Whittier, 15-5, 15-5, 15-10--Karen Kasper had 12 kills and two blocks as the Regals (8-2, 4-0) won their 17th consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Whittier.
Jennifer Pappas had 10 kills and four aces while Liz Martinez had 46 assists.
