A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was in stable condition Saturday after being shot by a man who escaped on a bicycle, prompting a massive search of the Paramount area where the attack occurred.
About six hours later, deputies arrested one man in connection with the shooting and three others were being questioned. It was not clear if he was the suspect on the bicycle.
The shooting took place about 4:30 p.m. after the unidentified deputy responded to a disturbance call at Texaco and Exeter avenues, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said.
When he arrived at the scene, spokeswoman Elsa Avila said, the deputy was confronted by the man on the bicycle who shot him, then fled with another man who was on foot.
The wounded deputy, who was hit five times in the upper body, was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, where he remained Saturday night.
About 70 sheriff’s deputies combed the area where the shooting occurred looking for the suspects, described as possible gang members.
