TWA to Cut Jobs, Ground Jets in New York

Trans World Airlines Inc. said it will cut $400 million in costs over the next year from its hub at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to reduce losses from its international operations. TWA, the nation’s seventh-largest airline, said it will cut hundreds of jobs and ground its Boeing 747 and Lockheed L-1011 jumbo jets as part of the consolidation. The moves are designed to get the best return from the St. Louis-based airline’s assets, eliminate unprofitable flights and reduce costs, said Roden Brandt, TWA’s senior vice president of marketing and planning.
