‘Ellen’ Is Family, Too

I find it outrageous that ABC feels that it has to temporarily suspend “Ellen” from its lineup rather than move the show back to 8 o’clock because it may turn out that her character is a lesbian (Morning Report, Jan. 11). Ultimately, we have a character who lives her life by high standards and morals who does her best to make her way in the world, and who is suddenly inappropriate for “family hour” viewing. Maybe ABC should rethink its decision and decide to become part of the solution, rather than perpetuate the bigotry that gay and lesbian people do not belong in the mainstream due to their orientation.

If it does turn out that her character is gay, Ellen could be a great role model for those who are also dealing with this issue. Didn’t Martin Luther King Jr. say something about judging people by the content of their character?
