JAMUL, Calif. — A truck packed with illegal immigrants spun out of control on a deserted road near this mountainous community about 30 miles east of San Diego and tumbled down an embankment, killing one person and injuring nine others, authorities said.
The 1979 truck crashed on a dirt road shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials said a woman was killed, six people appeared to have suffered major injuries and one had suffered minor injuries. Two other injured men were found early Wednesday by the U.S. Border Patrol and taken to a hospital.
Their injuries and conditions were not immediately known.
All were Mexican nationals, authorities said.
Several other people fled the truck, and five were detained by CHP officers.
