No. 11 Louisville Upset by St. Louis

A win on the road in big-time college basketball isn’t easy, so when it happens, it’s special.

Especially when the last time the team won an away game was more than a year ago.

St. Louis ended a drought of road losses going back to Dec. 9, 1995, in an improbable place Thursday night, upsetting No. 11 Louisville, 64-62, in a Conference USA game at Freedom Hall.

The last away win for the Billikens, 8-13 overall and 2-6 in Conference USA, wasn’t nearly as special, a double-overtime victory at Missouri Kansas City. And the upset was the first win for St. Louis over Louisville in 20 games.

The Cardinals (18-4, 5-2) trailed most of the second half but took a 62-61 lead on a layup by freshman Nate Johnson with 21.5 seconds left. After a timeout, Jeff Harris made a layup with 7.7 seconds left to clinch the victory.

No. 3 Kentucky 82, Western Carolina 55--The Wildcats (21-3), coming off an 84-79 overtime loss at No. 19 South Carolina on Tuesday night, scored 31 points off 21 Catamount (10-11) turnovers at Lexington, Ky.

No. 5 Utah 85, Brigham Young 49--The 36-point margin in the Western Athletic Conference game at Salt Lake City was the most lopsided in a BYU-Utah game since the Utes won, 62-25, in 1910.

The Utes (16-3, 8-1) have beaten the Cougars (1-18, 0-9) five straight times.

No. 9 New Mexico 75, Southern Methodist 72--Lamont Long made two free throws with 2.6 seconds remaining to preserve the WAC victory at Dallas.

After Long’s two free throws, SMU (12-8, 4-6) was unable to get the ball upcourt for an attempt at a three-point basket. Charles Smith scored 22 points to lead the Lobos (18-3, 7-2), who won their fifth in a row.

No. 12 Cincinnati 65, No. 21 Tulane 64--Danny Fortson, fresh off a one-game suspension, scored 34 points and made a layup with less than a second to play in the Conference USA game at Cincinnati, giving the Bearcats (16-4, 5-1) their first victory over a ranked team this season.

Cincinnati was called for a technical foul when several players piled up under the basket after the shot. Tulane (16-6, 7-1) wasted its chance when Jerald Honeycutt missed the first of two free throws.

Wisconsin 58, No. 13 Michigan 53--Paul Grant made a key basket in the final minute to help the Badgers (12-7, 5-5) upset the Wolverines (16-6, 6-4) in a Big Ten game at Madison, Wis.

No. 20 North Carolina 90, Florida State 62--The Tar Heels (14-6, 4-5) kept alive their hopes of a 33rd consecutive season with at least a third-place finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference by beating the Seminoles (12-7, 3-7) at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Rice 75, No. 22 Tulsa 58--The Owls (11-8, 5-4) took control with a 22-4 run in the WAC game at Houston to defeat a ranked team for the first time since beating then-No. 23 Texas, 80-69, on Jan. 6, 1996. The Golden Hurricane (17-6, 7-2) got no closer than 15 points the rest of the game.

Oregon State 61, Washington State 49--Freshman Ron Grady made a three-point basket with 54 seconds left at Corvallis, Ore., as the Beavers (6-13, 2-8) beat the Cougars (11-10, 3-7) for the first time since 1993.

Oregon 69, Washington 59--The Ducks (13-6, 4-6) opened the second half with a 14-3 run to take a 44-27 lead, its biggest of the game at Eugene, Ore., and went on to beat the Huskies (12-6, 5-5).

Charles Jones, the nation’s leading scorer, finished with 33 points and Long Island (14-6, 11-1) closed the game with a 10-0 run to defeat Mount St. Mary’s (10-11, 6-7), 94-86, in a Northeast Conference game. . . . Carmelo Travieso’s three-point basket with 9.1 seconds to play gave Massachusetts (13-10, 7-3) a 73-71 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over Duquesne (7-12, 3-6) at Amherst, Mass.

Earl Boykins scored 35 points to lead Eastern Michigan (17-4, 8-2) past Miami of Ohio (12-6, 7-3), 82-77, in a Mid-American Conference game at Ypsilanti, Mich. . . . Georgia Tech (9-11, 3-7), hoping to avoid its first first losing season since 1983, upset Virginia (15-7, 5-5), 66-52, in an ACC game at Atlanta. . . . Texas Christian (14-8, 3-7) avenged an earlier loss to Texas El Paso (9-10, 3-7) by beating the Miners, 77-55, in a WAC game at Fort Worth.

Fresno State held San Jose State to two points in the final 4:20 and beat the Spartans (10-9, 2-7), 66-61, in a WAC game at San Jose. The Bulldogs (15-8, 7-2) lead the Pacific Division. . . . San Diego State (12-8, 4-6) snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Air Force (5-14, 1-9) in a WAC game at San Diego.
