Freshmen Propel Birmingham to Another Conference Title

Freshman Zael Rivas took a pass from John Ortega and scored with 10 minutes to play Thursday, lifting the Birmingham High boys’ soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Taft and its third consecutive Northwest Valley Conference title.
Ortega, also a freshman, scored the first goal for the Braves (10-1-6, 7-1-6 in conference play).
In other boys’ soccer games:
El Camino Real 3, Granada Hills 0--Jason Leonard scored his 13th and 14th goals and the host Conquistadores (16-3-6, 6-2-6) finished second in the Northwest Valley Conference.
Buena 6, Hueneme 0--Six different players scored for the host Bulldogs (14-3-5, 8-2-4), who secured second place in the Channel League.
Moorpark 3, Santa Paula 1--Hugo Ramirez had two goals for the Musketeers (17-5-1, 9-1), who clinched a tie for the Frontier League title at Santa Paula (9-10, 4-6).
GIRLS’ SOCCER
La Canada 3, South Pasadena 0--Sarah Klang-Glienna scored two goals and the Spartans (6-8-2, 6-1-1) clinched the Rio Hondo League title.
SWIMMING
Phillips 66 National Swimming Championships--Jennifer Parmenter, a sophomore at L.A. Baptist High, placed second in the women’s 200 meter backstroke in Buffalo, N.Y. Parmenter, who has won five national titles in the past two years, timed 2:14.75.
