Defector Dies of Gunshot Wound

A prominent North Korean defector died 10 days after being shot in the head in Seoul, the South Korean capital, by an unidentified assailant. Police initially said they believed that North Korean agents were behind the attack on Lee Han Young, 36, who was shot Feb. 15 as he entered a friend’s apartment. But police later suggested that the shooting may have resulted from a failed business deal. Lee reportedly had amassed large debts in various business activities. Lee, who was the nephew of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s former wife, defected in 1982.
