Nathan Rice pitched a six-hitter, struck out six and allowed one walk for Cal State Northridge in a 4-1 victory over Chicago State on Thursday in an elimination game in the Johnny Quik baseball tournament at Fresno State.
Jose Miranda had his 13th home run of the season to highlight a three-run fourth inning for the Matadors (20-9-1).
Dan Jackson allowed all four runs and took the loss for Chicago State (0-8).
Canyons 13, Pierce 3--Jesse Daggett had four hits and drove in two runs to lead a 19-hit attack for the Cougars in a Western State Conference game at Canyons.
Hiram Damwijk had three doubles and Rob Renfeld scored three runs for Canyons (18-5, 6-1).
Ventura 11, Hancock 5--Dustin Tubb pitched an eight-hitter and struck out eight for the Pirates (14-7, 3-4) in a WSC game at Ventura.
With the score tied, 5-5, an error by Hancock (15-6, 5-2) in the fourth inning allowed Ventura catcher Monty Moritz, who had four hits, to score what proved to be the winning run.
Tubb allowed just two hits and no runs after the fourth inning.
Jeremy Pierce hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Andy Super had a solo homer in the seventh for Ventura.
Valley 8, Glendale 4--Ric Gonzalez struck out four in 1 2/3 innings, escaping a jam in the ninth inning to pick up a save for the Monarchs (2-16-3, 1-6) in a WSC game at Glendale.
Brett Niles hit a double and a home run for Glendale.
Bakersfield 9, Mission 3--Jose Sandoval had four hits, including a solo home run for the Free Spirit (9-12, 3-4) in a WSC game at Mission.
Santa Barbara 7, Oxnard 1--Shawn Fossen had an RBI double in the fifth inning for the Condors (10-11, 3-4) in a WSC game at Oxnard.
SOFTBALL
Azusa Pacific 7-4, Cal Lutheran 2-4--The Regals (13-2-1) committed eight errors in the first game at Azusa Pacific (16-4-1).
In the second game, the Cougars tied the score and had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but the umpires ruled it was too dark to continue.
Hancock 9, Moorpark 5--Erin Pacheco hit a three-run home run during a six-run sixth inning for Hancock in a WSC game at Moorpark.
Alicia Ramos had two hits and two RBIs for Moorpark (9-13, 2-2).
Valley 8, Santa Barbara 3--Jess Leivo had two hits and three RBIs for the Monarchs (8-9, 3-1) in a WSC game at Santa Barbara.
