Hoover’s Lopez Will Run With Arizona

Hoover High senior David Lopez, the 1996 Southern Section Division I cross-country champion and the runner-up in the state championships, has signed a letter of intent with Arizona.
Lopez, who placed 13th in the national cross-country championships, has a personal best of 9:15.75 in the 3,200 meters and placed ninth in last year’s state meet in that event.
Lopez will join former Hoover standout Margarito Casillas at Arizona. Casillas won the 1992 state Division I cross-country title.
Swimming
Jennifer Parmenter, a sophomore at L.A. Baptist High, placed seventh in the 400-meter freestyle and was part of the U.S. 400 freestyle relay that finished sixth Saturday in the World Short Course swimming championships at Goteborg, Sweden.
Parmenter timed 4:11.78 in the 400 and swam the second leg on the 400 relay that was clocked in 3:41.86. Claudia Poll of Costa Rica won the 400 in a world-record time of 4:00.03. China set a world record of 3:34.55 in winning the 400 relay.
Diving
Troy Dumais, a junior at Buena High, placed second in the three-meter springboard event in the U.S. Spring National diving championships at Auburn, Ala.
Dumais totaled 643.50 points, finishing behind winner P.J. Bogert of Mesa, Ariz., with 659.61 points.
In the women’s 10-meter platform synchronized event, Bennet Burt of North Hollywood and Alexis Gilbert of Ithaca, N.Y., placed third with 222.81 points.
