A benefit for Women Helping Women, a program that helps battered and poor women become self-sufficient, will take place Friday at Orange Coast College.
The event will feature bands, speakers and giveaways by local merchants. A college organization, Women’s Gathering, is hosting the event.
Based at the Rea Community Center on Hamilton Street, Women Helping Women provides assistance to abused and needy women in transition to economic self-sufficiency by providing free business clothes, resume assistance, haircuts and business-readiness workshops.
The organization, founded in 1995, is one of a few in Orange County that gives such services outside of a women’s shelter environment. About 35 to 40 women a month benefit. Clients are referred through clergy and social services organizations.
Friday’s benefit begins at 4 p.m. in the campus Forum. Admission is $4, or $2 with a clothing donation. Orange Coast College is at 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa.
