Berroa, Athletics Edge Brewers, 6-5

From Associated Press

Geronimo Berroa’s two-run single in the seventh inning snapped a tie and lifted the Oakland Athletics to a 6-5 victory over the Brewers at Milwaukee on Tuesday night.

With the score tied, 4-4, Berroa singled to center off Bryce Florie (1-1) to score Jason Giambi. Giambi and Jose Canseco had singled and Dave Magadan had walked before Berroa’s hit.

Marc Newfield’s sacrifice fly off Aaron Small in the seventh brought Milwaukee within 6-5. But the Brewers stranded the tying run at third when Jose Valentin struck out and Gerald Williams grounded out.

Willie Adams (2-3) surrendered four runs and seven hits in six innings, walked two and struck out three for the victory. Billy Taylor gave up the tying run to get to second in the ninth but held on for his seventh save.

Valentin atoned for his fifth-inning error that led to two runs with a two-run double off Adams in the bottom of the fifth, giving Milwaukee a 4-2 lead.

But Ben McDonald gave it right back in the sixth. Scott Brosius had a run-scoring groundout and Tony Batista added a two-out, run-scoring single. McDonald, who missed his last scheduled start with a strained right shoulder, gave up two earned runs and eight hits with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
