Natasha Axelrod, 13, of Laguna Niguel was named overall champion of the Orange County Interscholastic Equestrian League.
Axelrod, a student at St. Margaret’s Middle School in San Juan Capistrano, totaled 409 points in a series of seven horse shows to edge Missy Froley (401 points) of Dana Hills High for the title.
Axelrod won the overall championship in the novice and freshman divisions. Froley won the varsity division. Other division winners: Nicole Hannan of Santa Margarita High (junior varsity), Katherine Wagner of Troy High (western novice) and Katelyn McClure of Irvine High (western limit).
The league consists of 48 schools and 164 riders who compete during an eight-month season.

Renn Amstead, longtime boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach at Laguna Hills High, has resigned his positions but will continue teaching at the school, boys’ Athletic Director Dave Brown said Tuesday.
