Two Oxnard men were in the Ventura County Jail on Wednesday after they allegedly stole a man’s pickup truck at knifepoint just as he was leaving a grocery store.
An undercover detective working on a gang detail watched as the two--Ubaldo Salas, 23, and Jose Alvarez, 26-- allegedly confronted Baltazar Trejo, 21, with a knife Tuesday night, taking his truck and his wallet, an Oxnard police spokesman said. Trejo was unharmed.
The carjacking took place about 10 p.m. at Max Foods on Channel Islands Boulevard and Saviers Road. Det. Dennis McMaster watched from an unmarked car nearby and followed the pair as they sped from the scene, the spokesman said.
A patrol car stopped the car at San Marion and Iris streets, but the pair jumped out of the vehicle and ran.
After a short pursuit, they were captured by officers, the spokesman said.
They are being held on suspicion of carjacking and resisting arrest.
