$3.7 Million in Grants to Help UCI Research

UC Irvine has received $3.7 million in grants and donations for research on oral cancer and brain research equipment, a university spokesman said.

A five-year grant for $2.7 million from the National Cancer Institute will go to the Chao Family Clinical Cancer Research Center for a clinical trial to evaluate a new treatment for the prevention of oral cancer.

The treatment is made from a derivative of the soybeans and is expected to prevent mouth cancer by diminishing lesions that are precursors to cancer.

Meyskens said UCI is seeking 50 patients with the lesion condition, known as leukoplakia, to participate in the study. Information: (714) 456-6485.

A $1-million donation announced Wednesday came from renowned scientist and philanthropist Dr. Arnold O. Beckman to the William J. Gillespie Neuroscience Research facility, scheduled to open in the fall. The money will be used to acquire lab equipment for brain research.
