Police List Resources Needed to Combat 18th Street Gang

Responding to a request from the Los Angeles Police Commission, police officials released a report with a list of resources they say they need to combat the 18th Street gang.
The report, to be presented to the commission Tuesday, said it is unfair to expect police agencies to neutralize gangs because they are not solely the responsibility of community policing efforts.
“It also becomes necessary to realistically confront the question: Can the existence of gangs be totally eradicated from the streets of Los Angeles?” the report asked.
The LAPD requested money to expand the Witness Protection program, pay informants and buy computer software.
Officials also asked for changes in laws to allow more wiretaps and to ease the sharing of information on juvenile offenders among police, schools and social agencies.
