Girls’ Soccer Team Raising Funds for Tournament in Europe
- Share via
It will take more than bake sales and carwashes to send a team of 18 girl athletes from the Whittier area to their first European soccer tournament this summer.
To become eligible for the trip, each of the 14- and 15-year-old girls from high schools in La Habra, La Mirada, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs and Whittier must prepare a cultural report on Holland and Denmark, where they have been invited by the European Soccer Assn. to play against other teams from around the world.
Members of the team, dubbed the Heat, have played together for years on area teams.
In next month’s tournaments in Haarlem, Holland, and Hjorring, Denmark, they will join 13 other cultural exchange teams from the United States.
Despite candy sales, raffles and other efforts, a funding gap remains to be filled as the girls get ready to pack their suitcases.
