Dempsey-Tunney Fights Alive, Well and Lunching
- Share via
In today’s column (June 1), Jim Murray compares the meeting of John Daly and Tiger Woods to a fight between Jack Dempsey and someone named Firpo. His first name might have been Jake. I haven’t been around that long.
Two days ago, Mr. Murray’s column, on the same golf tournament, conjures up the ghosts of “Dempsey-Tunney. Notre Dame-Army. Koufax against the New York Yankees,” etc.
I mention this because a friend of mine at work and I have a standing bet. If Murray mentions Jack Dempsey in a column, my friend owes me lunch. If he does not, I buy. If he mentions both Dempsey and Babe Ruth, my friend owes me lunch and a beer.
I don’t need to tell you that I’m way ahead since we started Jan. 1.
Murray’s frame of reference seems to end with Willie Mays and Koufax. Our next bet may deal with simply whether columns mention anyone who is still alive.
