News of the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the nation’s slaves in 1863 did not reach Texas slaves until two years later, an unofficial holiday now known as “Juneteenth” that will be celebrated in Orange County on Saturday.
The celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lillie King Park in Santa Ana and is sponsored by the Orange County chapter of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People. This is the seventh annual local Juneteenth celebration, to commemorate the month that news reached Texas slaves in 1865.
Admission is free, and there will be music, food and arts and crafts booths. Also appearing will be television actors, storytellers and the El Toro Marine Color Guard.
Lillie King Park is at 500 W. Alton Ave.
The local celebration is a reflection of the one held by the freed Texas slaves when they learned of the Emancipation Proclamation.
“It’s an opportunity for the community to come together,” said local NAACP President James Tippins. “The African American community is so scattered, we don’t have a neighborhood.”
