L.A. County All-Stars Have a Double Collins

Jason and Jarron Collins of Harvard-Westlake High were selected to the L.A. County team that will
play a squad from Orange County in the All-Star Classic basketball game June 29 at Huntington Beach Ocean View High.
Jason Collins was named state player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports and Jarron was an all-state selection. The game features top graduating seniors from the Southland.
Boat race: Ventura Raceway will play host to the U.S. Auto Club Western States midgets series tonight at 7.
Billy Boat, who finished seventh in the Indy 500, is expected to participate in the 30-lap main event. Boat, who drives Indy cars for A.J. Foyt, was second in an Indy Racing League 500-kilometer event last Saturday at Texas World Speedway.
Ventura promoter Jim Naylor said Boat’s midget car owner, John Lawson, told him this week that Boat would run one more Western States race before heading East to run the national midget series.
Gym dandies: Sara Comden of Simi Valley High, Krista Lundgren of Alemany and Ashley Hooper of Chaminade Middle School, who compete for Le Club Gymnastics of Chatsworth, will take part in the U.S. Junior Gymnastics Championships next week at Orlando, Fla.
They qualified for the national tournament in a regional meet last month in Camarillo.
The trio leaves for Florida today. The meet runs from Sunday through Thursday.
Leaderboard: Kyle Thurston, 11-year-old son of Moorpark College assistant football coach Will Thurston, is third in the Southern California PGA Junior Golf Assn.’s boys’ 11-and-under points standings with 260 points.
Thurston, a Moorpark resident who plays out of Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks, ranks behind division leader Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights with 505 points and Eugene Choe of Temple City, who is second with 310 points.
Brandon Christianson of Valencia ranks fourth with 185 points.
Points are awarded on the basis of tournament performances throughout the summer and will be tabulated in September to determine age-division player of the year honors.
Signed, sealed: Softball player Kenya Bell of Calabasas has signed with Loyola Marymount.
Bell, an outfielder, batted .259.
Net gain: Tennis player Shaheen Bhanji of Scarborough, Canada, has signed with Cal State Northridge.
