Sophia Witherspoon scored 15 points and Kym Hampton added 13 as the New York Liberty defeated the sloppy Monarchs, 73-62, Monday night before 15,251 at Sacramento.
The Monarchs (1-1) shot only 35% and had 25 turnovers in their home opener. The Liberty had 24 turnovers of its own.
Rebecca Lobo had 12 points and Vickie Johnson had 10 for New York (2-0).
Lobo’s teammate on the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team last summer, Ruthie Bolton-Holifield, had 27 points for the Monarchs.
New York took an early lead on three consecutive three-point baskets by Lobo, Witherspoon and Johnson. The trio led a run and New York never trailed.
Bolton-Holifield’s family sang the national anthem, significant because the 1996 Olympian has 19 brothers and sisters.
