Garden Grove Girl Wins National Junior Title

ORANGE — May Mangkalakiri of Garden Grove won the under-14 girls’ singles title Thursday at the Junior National Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club.

Mangkalakiri, who defeated Clarice Thenard, 11-0, 11-8, in the final, teamed with Nicole Ling to finish second in the under-14 girls’ doubles final and teamed with Mike Changsawangpuvana of Placentia to finish third in the under-14 mixed doubles.

May’s brother, Nick Mangkalakiri, finished second in the under-12 boys’ doubles with teammate Ted Shear. Panita Phongasavithas of Anaheim Hills and teammate Yuki Yamazaki finished second in the under-12 girls’ doubles. Westminster’s Dat Nguyen and teammate Penny Salac were third in under-19 mixed doubles.
