Council to Apply for Grant to Help Fund Retail Center

In the continuing effort to revitalize MacArthur Park and the surrounding area, the Los Angeles City Council has approved a request from Mayor Richard Riordan to apply for a $3.4-million federal grant to help fund the park’s Retail Project Center.
The Department of Commerce grant would be used to acquire two privately owned parcels of land, demolish an earthquake-damaged structure and begin construction of the retail center. The center will consist of a supermarket, a community area designed for small businesses, a weekly open market and a parking structure.
The grant, part of the federal Infrastructure Development Program, is expected to be approved, according to the mayor’s office. The grant will be added to $14.4 million already earmarked for the project, which is scheduled for groundbreaking in late September.
