In Hot Water, Burroughs Rallies

Burroughs High, inspired by Coach John Kunishima’s scathing halftime speech, overcame a three-goal deficit to defeat Glendale, 14-12, in the first round of the Harvard-Westlake water polo tournament Thursday at Harvard-Westlake.
Ryan Ritmiller, who scored all four of his goals in the second half, and Brian Carsten, who scored four of his five after intermission, led the comeback for the Indians, who trailed, 7-4, one minute into the third quarter.
Burroughs (1-0) plays Peninsula today at 5:30 p.m. in the round-robin tournament. Glendale (0-1) faces Harvard-Westlake at 3:30.
In other first-round games:
Harvard-Westlake 27, Peninsula 6--Phil Spataru had 11 goals and Peter Hudnut scored five for the Wolverines (1-0).
Harvard-Westlake led, 7-0, after the first quarter and took a 14-1 halftime lead.
Goalie Brendan Connolly had 13 saves for the Wolverines.
Crescenta Valley 17, Crespi 5--Kenny Carpenter and Brian Lang each scored five goals for the Falcons.
Crescenta Valley goalie Brian Hasbrouck had 10 saves and five steals.
The Falcons play Agoura at 2:30 p.m. today. Crespi faces Rio Mesa at 4:30.
Agoura 28, Rio Mesa 2--Mitch Dexter had seven goals and Eugene Lai added six for the Chargers.
MEN’S SOCCER
CS Northridge 2, San Diego State 0--Luis Castro scored in the 26th minute and Michael Pries scored in the 40th minute at North Campus Stadium.
Christian Perez made three saves for Northridge (1-6).
Cal Lutheran 4, UC Santa Cruz 1--Sebastian Alvarado converted a penalty kick for the decisive goal in the 55th minute for the Kingsmen (1-1) at Cal Lutheran.
Matt Romeo, Ryan Girod and Scott Porter also scored, and Jeff Smilen, Dharma Clement and Jose Melgoza had assists.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Cal Lutheran 3, UC Santa Cruz 1--Kristin Taylor, Liz Christensen and Kim Holeman scored for the Regals (1-1) at Cal Lutheran.
Megan Cozad scored in the 69th minute for Santa Barbara.
First-half goals by Taylor and Christensen were unassisted. Holeman converted a pass from Lara Philby in the 53rd minute.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Agoura 11, La Reina 7--Freshmen Brooke Borisoff and Alyson Tyson swept their sets for the Chargers at Agoura.
Hart 10, Westlake 8--Serving underhand because an elbow injury, freshman Jenny Munroe won three sets for the Indians at North Ranch Country Club.
Rio Mesa 11, Newbury Park 7--Jill Brunner swept at No. 3 singles for the Spartans at Rio Mesa.
Calabasas 13, Thousand Oaks 5--Shervin Saedinia lost only three games at No. 1 singles for the Coyotes at Thousand Oaks.
Campbell Hall 10, Louisville 8--Amanda Blatt won two of three sets at No. 1 singles for the Vikings at the Studio City Racquet Centre.
Simi Valley 15, Notre Dame 3--Margo O’Donnell swept three sets for the Pioneers at Notre Dame.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Littlerock d. Rosamond, 15-10, 18-16, 15-3--Megan Mance served for seven consecutive points and the Lobos rallied from a 13-3 deficit in the second game at Littlerock.
Chaminade d. Agoura, 15-6, 15-1, 15-6--Lindsay Welch had 14 kills and for the Eagles at Agoura.
L.A. Baptist d. Louisville, 15-12, 16-14, 15-8--Kristen Jensen and Gloria Erickson each had 17 kills for the Knights at L.A. Baptist.
COLLEGE WATER POLO
Ventura 11, Grossmont 6--The Pirates (5-1) scored five points in the fourth quarter, including a two-point goal by Chris Parrish, in the Ventura tournament.
