If organizers of the upcoming Orange County Race for the Cure, a fund-raiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, had any worries about attendance, the Buena Park-based Southern California division of Lucky Stores has single-handedly laid them to rest.
A total of 1,156 Lucky employees in the division have signed up for the company’s team, largest by far of the 250 corporate and private teams registered for the race on Sunday.
Lucky’s runners will pour into Newport Beach from as far north as San Luis Obispo and as far south as San Diego. “It’s the largest single team we’ve ever heard of,” said race spokeswoman Sally Coombe.
The Orange County Race for the Cure bills itself as one of the largest run-walk races in the state. The annual race began in 1991 with a field of 3,700 competitors. Organizers expect more than 17,000 entrants this year.
