Pioneer High Honored for Math, Arts Programs

Pioneer High School, whose 1,500 students are predominantly Latino, has been named a School of Excellence by Hispanic magazine.
Pioneer, the only school in the state and one of only five in the nation to win the honor, was recognized in part because of its outstanding math and graphic arts programs.
“It validates what our teachers have been doing,” said Principal Pat Mascorro. “They really work hard.”
Pioneer’s graphics design academy allows students and teachers to work with local businesses. Its math academy was started by Javier Gonzalez, who was named California Teacher of the Year in 1995.
