La Russa Will Stay With Cardinals

St. Louis Cardinal Manager Tony La Russa, whose team slumped this season after coming within one victory of the World Series last year, exercised his option Wednesday to manage the team through 1999.
La Russa led the Cardinals to the NL Central title in 1996. This season, amidst a series of injuries, they have struggled.

New York Met catcher Todd Hundley will have a ligament replaced in his right elbow on Friday and probably will miss the first half the 1998 season. . . . Minor-league pitcher Doug Million, the Colorado Rockies’ first pick of the 1994 amateur draft, died after an asthma attack. He was 21 and had been playing with the Rockies’ Instructional League team in Arizona. . . . The father of Atlanta Brave pitcher Greg Maddux, accused of fondling a hotel housekeeper, pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge in Cleveland Municipal Court and was fined $500. . . . Greg Maddux will start for the Braves in the first game of the playoffs next week.
