Re “Scrutiny Renewed of Security at LAX,” Sept. 22:
Airport police officers must pass the same training requirements that all peace officers in California must pass, as set by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training. The Airport Police Bureau uses the Los Angeles Police Academy, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy or the Rio Hondo College Police Academy for basic police recruit training. The Airport Police Bureau in-service training is often well within POST compliance.
Regarding the Mark Lawrence Kulp incident, the LAPD, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Federal Aviation Administration were all notified of the incident while Kulp was in custody at the airport police station.
The Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers’ Assn. has no official position at this time on the merger of the Airport Police Bureau into the LAPD. No formal proposal on an LAPD merger has been submitted to the association. However, the association will carefully review any such proposal.
